CPT – Individual solutions for operating rooms

The sets of individualized procedures (CPT's - Custom Procedure Trays) are pre-selected, in sterile packaging, containing single-use devices for surgical procedures. They constitute a simple and efficient way of making surgical products available, from basic compresses, drapes, blades, and dressings for treating wounds, through implants. CPT's have been set up in close collaboration with healthcare providers and physicians to ensure the right products are delivered to the right place at the right time.

What are the benefits of CPTs?

A solid CPT program can deliver efficiencies in many areas of health services when it is designed and managed properly:

  • Reduction of time and increase of efficiency
Operating theaters and inpatient rooms are valuable services in high demand.
As such, it is important to minimize the time spent on pre-procedure creation and post-cleanup. By avoiding the need to unpack the individual products and organize them in the order they will be used, a large number of surgeries can be performed in a given period of time. This increase in time savings and efficiency benefits patients and reinforces the improvement in the quality of their care.

  • Reduction of administrative costs
The minimization of cost management with inventory and documentation and ordering processes is simplified, since these are placed by tray, and not by individual components contained within it. The increasing transparency of the overall costs of surgeries has also made it easier for managers to analyze their total costs.

  • Increased patient safety
Sterile trays improve aseptic control, leaving patients with less exposure to healthcare-associated infections.

  • waste reduction
When you remove a pack, rather than a series of individual components, there is less packaging waste. Calculate that the CPT's eliminated one garbage bag per procedure, using surgical packs.
The CPT's benefit the global level of security in the Operating Rooms, establishing shared routines, standardizing procedures and eliminating the risk of omitting intermediate steps.

  • However, this context only occurs if hospitals are available to manage the complexity of a CPT program.

Challenges

The CPT's will only demonstrate their value when they adapt to the conditions of the hospitals and the routines of the teams, which involves a contiguous alignment between the different functions assumed. Industry should work with healthcare providers to create a detailed needs analysis – pre-, during and post-procedure – before designing efficient and cost-effective CPT's.
